How Can I Ask for a Refund for Botched Porcelain Veneers?

I got veneers just before moving to MD. It was part of starting a new phase of my life. However, the veneers are too long and bulky. I lived 700 miles away from my new location, so after giving my former dentist three chances to get the veneers right, I gave up. I couldn’t afford to stay there and pay rent in MD. I want a refund, but I suspect that I won’t recoup all the money I spent on veneers. Where do I start? Thanks. Saray

Saray,

Dentists generally respond to refund requests in one of two ways. Understanding the difference helps you decide how to proceed.

The first approach is a goodwill request. Maintain a respectful relationship and appeal to the dentist’s sense of fairness. Sometimes, support from another dentist can strengthen your case. However, if you feel too upset to communicate with your dentist, this approach may not be realistic. A certified letter can seem confrontational and may not support a resolution.

How Can You Ask a Dentist for a Refund?

If a polite request isn’t an option, you move into a more formal refund demand, which requires clear justification and at least some leverage.

Before taking that step, understand what may strengthen your position:

  • Documentation showing that the dental work caused harm
  • A second opinion from another dentist supporting your concerns
  • Evidence that additional treatment (such as a root canal) resulted from the original work

Without this kind of support, it becomes difficult to make a strong case. Relocating to another state can also limit your options for filing complaints or pursuing formal action.

Your priority should be correcting the dental work. Choosing the right dentist makes a significant difference in your outcome.

Cosmetic dentistry requires a high level of skill and aesthetic judgment. Not every general dentist focuses on cosmetic work. When selecting a dentist for a smile makeover, look for someone who can consistently produce natural, well-balanced results.

If you’re evaluating your options, consider the following:

  • Ask to see before-and-after photos of actual patient cases
  • Look for advanced training or a focus in cosmetic dentistry

Keep in mind that dissatisfaction with solely the appearance of your dental work usually does not qualify as malpractice. However, if the work caused functional problems or problems with your oral health, you may have a case.
