Severe toothaches are a common dental emergency. Frequently they’re caused by an infection in the pulp of the tooth. This infection makes the tooth pulp swell, but the tooth walls give that swelling nowhere to go. That’s why tooth infections are so excruciatingly painful.
Infections inside the tooth can spread to the gum, causing an abscess. An abscess looks like a swollen bump on your gum. It may leak fluid, leaving a bad taste in your mouth. Abscesses can be very painful, but they aren’t always. They can also form because of deep gum infections.
Infections that spread from teeth and gums to the jaw bone and beyond can lead to systemic infections. In worst-case scenarios, they can be life-threatening. So even if you can push through the pain, it’s still best for you to see the dentist. We promise we won’t make you feel bad about your teeth. If you’ve had a tooth knocked out due to an accident, such as a fall, Dr. Michalski may be able to save it. First, you’ll need to protect your tooth. Wrap it in a moist towel or put it in a cup of slightly warm milk. Call us immediately. If you can get here within half an hour, we may be able to put the tooth back in its original position.
